We are currently recruiting an experienced Accountant/Divisional Controller for our Head Office located in Edmonton, AB.
The Role
Are you a recently designated accountant or working towards your designation? We are looking for an intermediate to experience accountant to work on the day-day accounting and provide additional support to the Director of Finance in overseeing some of our small business units. This includes managing the completion of ledger accounts, and monthly close and reconciliation of financial statements while evaluating and making appropriate improvements to internal accounting processes to ensure that practices align with the organization's overall goals.

Essential Functions

Leadership/Management
  • Supervises accounts receivable, accounts payable, and accounting staff.
  • Potential backup for the Director of Finance to Payroll oversight.
  • Trains, supervises, mentors and coaches the accounting team to maximize performance and to continually achieve improved service and results.
  • Ensure accounting staff have the information and skills they require to perform their jobs in an accurate and timely manner; resolve any work issues that may arise
  • Mentor and guide operations, accounting and project management staff through the monthly reporting process
  • Conduct meaningful performance reviews and career planning with direct reports
  • Maintain a high level of morale among direct reports.
Accounting
  • Work closely with senior management and operations staff on strategic finance and administration matters to achieve the required financial results.
  • Preparation and management of all accounting operations including billings, payables, and cost accounting.
  • Oversee and assume responsibility for financial reporting including monthly, quarterly and year-end; delegate tasks and responsibilities accordingly to ensure all is completed accurately and within required deadlines, this includes:
  • Assist DOF with the external audit team for annual review engagements
  • Prepare, review, and approve (from direct reports) monthly journal entries
  • Manage general ledger reconciliations and review schedules prepared by direct reports
  • Understand payroll cycles and sales/use tax reporting
  • Oversight of government reporting and filing requirements
  • Review and understand the flow of transactions through the general ledger accounts
  • Supervise month-end close process and ensure all deadlines are met free of error by direct reports.
Systems
  • Oversee, monitor and work to improve accounting procedures, internal controls and system management and initiate corrective action
  • Act as liaison between the accounting department and other company departments to assist with system and process implementation as needed.
Controls
  • Audit workflow to ensure that all accounting transactions are processed accurately and in compliance with all internal controls.
Other
  • Provide back-up for Director, Finance
  • Handle special projects as requested.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting
  • Has or working towards professional designation (CGA, CMA, CA, CPA)
  • 4 plus years of experience in a senior accounting role
  • Demonstrated understanding of full cycle and cost accounting
  • Experience with year-end reporting
  • Experience in evaluating the effectiveness of procedures and controls.
  • Ability to lead and operate within an environment where change is frequent.
  • Commitment to recruiting, training, mentoring, and retaining a focused team.
  • Strong leadership capability as evidenced by success in team/collaborative work environments.
  • Ability to forge, grow and maintain positive relationships with multiple groups.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities, capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment.
  • Familiarity with the construction industry is an asset but not required.
  • Experience processing payroll in the construction industry would be considered an asset.
